Name Ideas
Here is a list of my magazine name ideas ,
The Hindu Times - This name is clever becuase it is a name of a song by Oasis but also sounds like a magazine/paper , it could be argued that the "Hindu" part could be misinterpreted but this is unlikely as the majority of my target audience will know this song and see the connection.
Headshrinker - Once again a song name , this name not only sounds good for a magazine some of the lyrics reflect my magazines ideology (shown below) - This verse is about simply not caring about what people think about you and it gives off a real rock and roll feel when listened to.
Headshrinker Lyrics
Lost in a fog
I've been treated like a dog
And I'm out of here
I got no name
And I feel no shame
And I got no fear
And I bow down
To the tears of a clown
Whatever's going down
Is coming around
I hope you don't regret today
For the rest of your lives

Target Audience and Price
My target audience will be people aged from 15 to their mid 30's/early 40's and will feature articles on people such as Noel Gallagher , John Lennon and The Arctic Monkeys. It will be primarily aimed at people intrested in Rock and Indie music so my magazine will have a similar feel to NME and Q. The socio-economic groups for my magazine will mainly be C2 (Lower skilled manual) and DE (Semi and unskilled manual) as working class people are more likely to be intrested in the type of music my magazine will feature due to the working class backgrounds of bands such as Oasis and The Stone Roses.
My magazine is going to be a weekly publication and cost about £2.50 as I feel this price is affordable for everyone my target audience such as teens still at school and people in full time jobs , I want my magazine to be printed weekly to make sure it is as up to date as possible, becuase if it was monthly things could happen after its been published and when people are reading it would be out of date.

Masthead Font Choice
For my Masthead I want to use the font Legrand as it connects to my target audience and genre of music as it is 60's style and has been used by many Bands over the years, for example: Beady Eye.

Choice of Genre
My magazine will mainly foucus on Britpop and Rock aswell as indie music. Some photos of existing bands I would like to feature are below.
Noel Gallagher / NGHFB / Oasis
Arctic Monkeys
Liam Gallagher / Beady Eye / Oasis Dave Grohl / Foo Fighters
Miles Kane / Last Shadow Puppets
Market Research 3 Q
Language : The masthead of Q magazine is unuasual in a way as most masthead's take up the width of the magazine but Q's is a box in the left corner, also unlike other magazines the Q masthead/logo appears on top of the image for maximum attention were as on others the main image overlaps the the logo. The main image on this edition of Q is a picture of Liam Gallagher which takes up the whole magazine and is very striking with the lighting used also it is clever the way the other members of Beady Eye appear in the reflection on his shades this really utilises the space of the magazine by focusing on the frontman but still including the rest of the band which creates more room for article titles around the image. The text for the main image is written in red to stand out and link the image and the text.
Institution : Q magazine is published by Bauer media.Q was first published in October 1986, setting itself apart from much of the other music press with monthly production. Circulation of Bauer Media Group's magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week
Ideology :
Audience : Q's audience is open minded music fans driven to continually discover new music The audience is split 75% male to 25% female aged 18 onwards to 40's
Representation : The Q brand has developed a worldwide reputation as a trusted and premium quality voice of musical authority amongst fans, musicians and the music industry alike.
Market Research 2 Mojo
Language : The masthead of Mojo magazine is quite plain and gives off almost a classic feel due to the use of black and white colours aswell as a vintage font this relates to the content becuase Mojo tends to feature established bands/artists. The main image of Oasis takes up the entire width of the page and overlaps the masthead but it is still legible , Mojo's colour scheme is black , white and red. It also uses thumbnails to show other articles featured in the magazine. Mojo only uses 1 font for Titles and body text apart from the headline "oasis" which is written in a stencil font which makes it stand out.
Institution : Mojo magazine is published by Bauer media. Mojo was first published on 15 October 1993; in keeping with its classic rock aesthetic, the first issue had Bob Dylan and John Lennon as its first cover stars. Bauer Media Group is a large German publishing company based in Hamburg, which operates in 15 countries worldwide.Circulation of Bauer Media Group's magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week
Ideology :
Audience : Discerning and passionate music aficionados, the MOJO audience is predominantly male (77%) and affluent (63% ABC1). These heavy consumers of music see their passion as discovery without boundaries, genre and decade being secondary to quality.
Representation : MOJO is the world's biggest UK music magazine, delivering a monthly dose of world class journalism and iconic photography. It represents a carefully crafted musical archive, providing its audience with an authentic, independent and emotional connection to the music. Classic sits comfortably with cutting edge, with quality and integrity being constant
Market research
Market Research using L.I.I.A.R : NMELanguage :
The masthead on the nme magazine is bold in red and stands out even though the main cover image overlaps it. The main image is a head and shoulders shot of Alex Turner and Miles Kane they are the main focus on this front cover due to the image taking up the majority of the page and it is also the only image, the rest of the content is text. It is instantly recognisable who the models are even if you don't them as their names are actually written on them in the image on a black background which stands out and is easy to read. The house style is consistant and clean as it only uses three colours which all complement eachother (white, black and red) also the use of fonts is consistant as it uses the same font for titles and headlines and a italic font for the details of a article. Nme also uses skylines on their front covers , on the cover ive featured the skyline is red and advertises articles on The Courteeners and Franz Ferdinand.
Institution : NME magazine is published by IPC media. IPC media is a publishing company based in the UK they produce over 60 brands of magazines. This enables them to reach almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men. This totals to almost 26 million UK adults.
Ideology :
Audience : NME is aimed at people who are interested indie music. The target audience of the magazine is males aged 15-30's. The average age of the audience is 25.As teenagers fall into the target audience the price cannot be really high and has to be reasonably priced , at £2.20 they have acheived this as most people will find this affordable.
Representation : NME tries to represent itself in a young way to appeal to its target audience , the magazine focuses on new , up and coming music hence the name New Musical Express (NME) , also they usually have a couple of articles about established artists in this magazine it is the rolling stones this is to appeal to the other half of their target audience.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of brief
L - My magazine will contain a masthead at the top of the page , a main image which will take up the majority of the page, whatever the main image is featuring on is what my double page spread will also be about. I am going to have a band on the front cover making eye contact with the audience to get their attention. , The colour scheme for my magazine will conatin two to three colours at the most to keep it tidy , the colour schem will extended to my contents page aswell for consistency. I will feature thumbnails and titles around the main image to give information about other articles in this edition of the magazine. I want my magazine to stand out so people spot it on a shelf and want to buy it.
My double page spread will contain multiple photos of my featured artist and main bodies of text about them.
I- My magazine would be published by a big , established compnay like IPC or Bauer theese companies produce hundreds of magazines including NME and Q also they reach millions of people a week all around the world.
I- My magazines Ideology will be focused towards working class people and strongly against modern pop music. It will feature bands like Oasis , Foo Fighters , The Stone Roses and The Arctic Monkeys , the majority of these bands are from working class backgrounds so the target audience will be able to relate to them.
A- My target audience will be roughly 15-30's as the younger people will enjoy the articles about the more modern artists like Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane and if they are working class they will like looking back at Oasis as it is a similar genre and they will be able to relate to them. Also people who grew up listening to bands like Oasis , Blur and The Smiths will enjoy my magazine as it will heavily feature early indie rock/Britpop.
R- I will represent my magazine in a way which connects with genre's featured within , I want a Rock and Roll theme in my magazine but a big part of it is the attitude , the reputation and just not caring what people think so I think this will connect with my target audience as they will most likely be working class and it will inspire them and give confidence.

L.I.I.A.R Evaluation of my magazine
L.I.I.A.R Evaluation of my magazine
LANGUAGE:
My magazine challenges forms and conventions of real media products by having 3 photos all with backgrounds put onto a plain canvas with the title names in coloured bubbles conventional magazines usually have all of the pictures backgrounds removed or have 1 with background and text written straight onto it.
My magazine has a Banner headline which takes up the width of the page which was an idea I put forward in my planning. My magazine also uses brand image to show the college in a positive light this is done by having one of the main headlines “Coming to Wyke was the best thing I ever did” this combined with the smiling students makes the college look like a good place to go. I have kept a consistent style while using different colours by keeping the style of the text bubbles on my magazine the same basic shapes and using the same fonts this also helped me keep my house style the same by using green ,purple and white (The colleges colours) on my front page and contents page. I have put captions under all my photos on the front page to give a “sneak peak” of the story.
I have a exclusive in my magazine which is “food at wyke” this is an exclusive as it was written especially for this magazine. My magazines strapline is made by students for students which helps sell it because students can relate to whats being said.
INSTITUTION:
My magazine could be sold in college at the reception area or in shops in the vicinity of the college this would also make the magazine appeal to more people not just students as people may see it in the shop and think it’s only 20p it may be worth a read this then increases peoples knowledge of Wyke in turn they might then recommend it to relatives/friends this then makes Wyke a more desirable destination.
IDEOLOGY:
My magazine focuses on the education side of college life rather than the social side, for instance all my articles are college related were as some magazines in my research featured stories about the drinking scene around the colleges.
AUDIENCE:
My target audience is mainly students at the college but also I have included articles for new/ future students such as “Your guide to Wyke” , “Freshers information”. The demographic for my magazine could actually be a lot broader as mentioned above if it was sold in shops then it would be extended to people in the local community.
I have tried to attract my audience by using the college’s bright colours and a lot of pictures as well as having the magazine’s cheap price quite large as students don’t usually have a lot of money to spend on things which aren’t essential.
REPRESENTATION:
My media product represents particular social groups by showing typical college students on the cover smiling which connotes that they are enjoying their time at the college.
